Uncle Tom’s Cabin

What thoughts first came to mind when you read the title? Depending on your age and other factors, you might have read Uncle Tom’s Cabin in school or maybe you simply recognize the title as a book about American slavery. No matter the thoughts it may provoke, the author’s (Harriet Beecher Stowe) mission was to, “exhibit [slavery in the U.S.] as a living dramatic reality. She endeavored to show it fairly, in its best and its worst phases.”

This blog post isn’t about slavery or race relations in America, but it is about discovering unique words that we no longer or seldom use anymore and a brief review of the word “uncle tom.”

Reading classic novels is a great way to expand your vocabulary. As a proofreader and copy editor I have the luxury of using a thesaurus almost daily, which also helps with learning new words. Often times writers use the same repeated words or phrases in a document when more variety in word choice is needed. I look for these and other issues during my copy editing services. Feel free to take a look at my website to learn more https://tgproofing.com/proofreading-copy-editing-services/

Here are a few words I chose to highlight from the book. I hope you will find these words interesting and seek to use them in your next writing.

  • dilettante – one who dabbles in an art or field of knowledge (American Heritage Dictionary)
  • restive – stubbornly resisting control (Merriam-Webster.com Dictionary)
  • expiate – to make amends for (Merriam-Webster.com Dictionary)
  • valise – suitcase (Merriam-Webster.com Dictionary)
  • pertinacious – adhering resolutely to an opinion, purpose, or design (Merriam-Webster.com Dictionary)
  • stentorian – extremely loud (Merriam-Webster.com Dictionary)
  • providence – God as the power sustaining and guiding human destiny (Merriam-Webster.com Dictionary)

Whenever you write anything, make sure you understand the meaning and even the history behind the words. Also, just because a term is used frequently in culture doesn’t mean everyone is using it right. Take for example the word “uncle tom,” there are several meanings for this phrase, here are a few: (1) an insult towards an African American who doesn’t line up with liberal ideology; (2) an African American who is not angry at people of European descent; and the most common one as defined by Merriam Webster, (3) a black person who is overeager to win the approval of whites. However, if you read Uncle Tom’s Cabin, you undoubtedly discover that these definitions do not define Tom. Tom was a righteous and devout Christian that was loyal and did no wrong. He stood up to an evil master with his life on the line and died a martyr. So, the next time you use a word or phrase in your writing, consider its full meaning. Seek out help if you need assistance with clarity in your documents.

Until next time,

Take care and God bless!

Insight Into My Journey

I recently shared with someone the reasons why I became a business owner; here is a portion of my story.

I never thought I would be a business owner. My situation in life required me to stretch beyond the boundaries I originally set for myself.

My husband is in the military, so we move around a lot, which means I would be destined to find a job every 3 years, and on top of that we had our first child a couple years ago. Because of my faith in Christ, my primary responsibility will always be to my family, so becoming a business owner was the natural progression. I’m available to support my husband through all the trials of his demanding career. I can nurture and homeschool our daughter. I can pursue my own passions and have a creative outlet. It’s a win-win-win.

My passion for proofreading and copyediting began at a very early age through the joy of reading. I developed a love for reading the way people put words together. The English language is so complex that 5 people can have the same sentiment, but express it in 5 different ways. My role as a copyeditor allows me to help with clarity without changing the author’s voice. The services that I provide are all about enhancing others, which is very important to me. I have never wanted the spotlight, but I can help you shine bright.

What is “Professional Level of Trust”?

Businesses today understand that the way to become a thriving success and maintain it, is by continual engagement with repeat customers as well as potential customers. Due to this on-going contact, there is an increase in marketing material being created for consumption. Sometimes in the excitement of keeping up with a growing and ever-changing marketing industry, mistakes can happen. We, here at TGary Proofing Services, want to help you avoid those mistakes by building your professional level of trust with your clientele.

What does the phrase “professional level of trust” mean? As a business, the customer trusts you to provide a high quality product, exceed expectations, and consistently provide the best possible customer service on the market. I know your services/products are excellent, but what makes a customer even take a leap of faith to buy your service/product? Hint… Everything! Specifically, your written documentation: ads, email newsletters, testimonials, and reviews. Everything your customer can read from you or about you is a direct reflection of the quality of work you will provide. If your content is riddled with errors, potential customers may never take a chance on what you have to offer. Grammar issues and typos in your written communication show a lack of professionalism and laziness. The details matter. Your bottom line is depending on it.

As your brand gains more recognition, we are here to help you build/maintain a professional level of trust with your clientele. We are here for you! Don’t hit send, submit a document, or present a proposal without a proofreading or copy editing review. Let us help you make a great first impression. We are here for you!

What are your goals for the year 2019?

I used to be an avid reader. The love of reading started very early for me. An early memory, around the age of five, involves me anxiously waiting for my monthly book haul in the mail. It was a true delight, and I am grateful for parents who encouraged my enthusiasm for reading. What are some of your earliest memories? I know a two-year-old boy who loves to play the drums, and the joy on his face is the sweetest thing. I wonder if he will continue this love or will it be a distant memory as he grows? Is one of your goals to get back to your original love/hobby?

Life happens. We grow up, and everything else is more important than our hobbies. Of course, we handle responsibilities, but there is a space for rest and relaxation as well. My days are filled with countless adventures due to theroles of being a military wife and mother to a two-year-old daughter. I am constantly learning how to better balance everything which has been the key to not becoming overwhelmed.

This year, I will put my feet up and read. This year, I will balance my time well. This year, I will delve deeper into books for growth, learning, and enjoyment. The first emphasis on growth and learning will always be spiritual for me which includes daily Bible reading. Starting my day off with prayer and reading the Word of God provides a sense of strength and peace for the rest of the day. What is something that you do every single day to start your day off right?

Join me as I begin my reading journey goal. I will read books of various genres including: classics, inspirational, biographies, and other fiction. I believe there is something that can be learned from almost any piece of literature. Sometimes you learn lessons to follow, while other times you learn lessons to shun. Either way, a great joy of reading is allowing the literature to transport you to a place or a period of time.  Comment below some of your goals and/or recommended reading for the year 2019.

My first book is the classic Uncle Tom’s Cabin by Harriet Beecher Stowe. I look forward to delving into this classic, and exploring my thoughts about it.
